[ music playing ] >> al green toon there. >> there are only two balls this year. the president and the first lady enjoying the dance. >> tens of thousands of people filled the national mall today to get a look at the inauguration ceremony.

ktvu's ken pritchett is live in the nation's capital where he spoke with people who were thrilled to be a part of history. ken? >> reporter: by one estimate the crowd size at this inauguration was bigger than expected, 1 million people. we were in with that crowd as they converged on the capital. many who said getting around was easier than four years ago. >> the streets of washington were clogged with convoys, such as this one. with vendors hocking anything with the president's image and the lines were long just to get through security but spirits were high. >> i am expecting a good events. >> reporter: this is the view from the capital steps where the presidents took the oath of office. >> definitely a different number of people. not as many people as there was before but it is still an amazing feeling. >> reporter: from the ceremony in the capital, many made their way to pennsylvania avenue, to get a look at the president. most just saw the motorcade. >> he got out and got back in.

i saw him wave and get back in. >> reporter: despite the grid lock we have seen over the past four years, especially in the last few months, there was a feeling of optimism in the crowd. tonight the mind is on celebration. there are two official balls taking place right now. we will have more on that in a few minutes. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. [ music playing ] >> beyonce closed the inauguration ceremony this morning with a performance of the national anthem. she is a favorite of the obama family. she sang at last four years ago. >> president obama surprised many people by including a line in his address about gay rights. >> our journey is not complete till our gay brothers brothers and sisters are treated like

everyone else under the law. surely the love must be equal as well. >> it is the first time the issue of gay rights has been mentioned in an inaugural address. >> the opera house opened its doors for a watch party today. >> my fellow americans, the oath i have sworn before you today -- >> people gathered to watch president obama's faith in america's future speech. one woman came for the atmosphere and a speech that is all about community involvement. >> you know, he strikes the right amount of hope and challenges all of us to step forward and participate in our government which is important. >> people were thrilled the festivities on the day that honored martin luther king, jr. for more on today's festivities

in washington, log on to www.ktvu.com and click on the inauguration tab. while addressing the nation today president obama promised action on climate change. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us now live in foster city with reaction and the reality. john? >> reporter: indeed it is beautiful here tonight at center park but experts tell me do nothing and today's children will inherit a changed world. >> reporter: foster city could be at the bottom of the bay as seas rise from climate change, water, food and civilization disrupted. >> we will respond to the threat of climate change knowing the failure to do so would betray our children. >> reporter: he devoted a minute to climate change. it was more than in the reelection campaign so it was a

channel 2 news. hundreds of people road the bay area freedom train on its journey from san jose to san francisco. >> 15-mile long trip commemorates the march led by martin luther king, jr. in 1965. >> really important for kids to know how far we have come. i decided to bring my daughters to see the memorial. >> freedom. just trying to be hopeful for the dream that he wanted for all of us. >> after the train arrived in san francisco riders walked along city streets to the martin luther king, jr. memorial fountain. it is inscribed with king's words in a dozen languages. mese are searching for -- police are searching for mome

invasion robbers. two homes were innovated. the first homeowner lost jewelry and cash and unharmed. the second location a suspect punched the home owner and locked the husband down stairs. one of them shot through the front window of the house. police are asking for help in identifying a man who shot at employees while attempting to rob the store. police say the man entered the store saturday night demanding money. two retreated to a room with bullet proof glass as the suspect fired. anyone with any information is asked to call police. rescue in the waves today. officials say a surfer started suffering cramps before noon and couldn't swim back to shore so he climbed on seal rock.

it was too rough for a rescue boat to get close to the boat so swimmers had to convince him to jump back into the water to get him to safety. the 49ers are heading to the super bowl. fans are scrambling to get their gear and for some that means tickets for the big game. >> robert handa is live where 49er fever is running high. robert? >> reporter: 5:00 p.m. we showed you what jim harbaugh and the team are focusing on. for fans, it has them searching for tickets, souvenirs and a way to see the super bowl in person. >> reporter: each day the new stadium looks more like a place for a super bowl and it is considered for the 2016 game but today fans are trying to get to this year's super bowl. >> getting the cash and ready

to spend and finding the right tickets. i would like to stay someplace nice. >> reporter: how much will it cost you? >> ballpark, 20 grand. >> reporter: he says he has been making calls and sees problems ahead. >> seems like getting the tickets might be the easy part. it is the hotel and travel that might be difficult. >> reporter: what have you heard? >> rooms going for $900 a night with a four night minimum. >> reporter: some fans are talking super bowl, many were out grabbing up momentsoes of the championship -- momentos of the championship. >> she said stores ran out of stuff. >> after watching and losing and not going to the playoffs it is exciting. exciting. >> reporter: that enthusiasm is generating sales at the new stadium. >> we are doing well with our

luxury suits. >> reporter: as you heard the cost of a super bowl trip depends on your package deal. the most complete packages run about $6,000 a piece but that includes tickets, hotel and airfare. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a fight following yesterday's game sent a falcon's fan to the hospital with a knife wound. a fancon's fan started arguing with a 49ers fan. the fan punched him who then pulled out a knife and stabbed the fan in the throat. the victim is expected to be recover. the 49ers fan is still at large. members of several occupy groups rallied today in san francisco to voice anger at wells fargo. more than one person accused wells fargo of shabby treatment. >> at one time as a counselor i

had a file cabinet of 100 families who was dealing with these fraudulent loan practs with wells fargo. -- practices with wells fargo. >> a spokesmans says they advocate responsible lending and loans originate with wells fargo perform better than with other banks. there is a new call to tear down a part of a san francisco freeway. how interstate 280 could change and the motivation behind the idea. >> plans for a new casino a prompting inspections, what residents worry may be in jeopardy. >> cool, wet weather, i will have what you can expect for tomorrow and when i expect the rain will arrive.

mayor ed lee is proposing to tear down part of interstate 280. consumer editor tom vacar is live with what is behind the idea. tom? >> reporter: advocates want to tear down this part of the 280 freeway all the way downtown to create a wonder down under. >> reporter: it exists because voters caused a portion of the damaged central freeway to be torn down. here commerce with traffic and little parking flourished. >> i got a good vibe from it. people relaxing. enjoying themselves in the -- themselves in the sun. >> the director is proposing to do the same thing under the 280 approach from the city to

16th street to 40th 4th street. >> taking down a freeway and creating surface streets with homes, shops, can transform an area. >> reporter: many shops and residents were already there. that is not so with the 280. >> studies found the more freeways in central city the worse off they do economically. >> reporter: that does not convince willie brown. >> when we originally reduced the size of the 280 extension in order to do mission bay i thought we have done all that needed to be done. i will now have to be convinced otherwise. >> reporter: given the nature of san francisco politics, it is an idea that is still way off. reporting live, consumer editor

tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. lawyers say they are taking their case to the california supreme court. she won in a lower court only to see the verdict over turned. she claimed they terminated her because she became pregnant. inspectors are testing water wells near a proposed casino. some fear the casino will use up their water supplies. the website reports inspections started last week to determine water levels before construction starts. 24 of the world's best surfers competed yesterday in the mavericks. it was the first time in three years the competition has been

held. 30,000 people turned out to watch the event. spectators weren't allowed on the beach or the cliff, instead a viewing partsy was set up -- party was set up. the winner was from santa cruz. a fine winter day but our mild dry days are numbers. we have changes in the forecast. a look outside right now. light out there. 13 miles per hour winds from the east. gusty as well. outside of that, most of us calm to light and temperatures beginning to flip. low 60s in areas like morgan hill. now we are beginning to cool off. 57 san francisco. mid-50s around the bay. inland areas a cooler than that. wallimate creek upper 40 --

two official balls are going on right now in washington, d.c. ktvu's ken pritchett is live with more on tonight's celebrations. ken? >> reporter: well we have heard how it would be smaller than the last, in terms of the crowd and the official events. we see example of that right now, some of that down sizing with the official balls taking place right now. now what you should see is video of the commander in chief's ball. this video taken a short -- listen to that for a moment. this is video of the ball with the president and the first lady taking a the dance floor. it is one of two official balls that the they will attend. the official events are small

in number but not in size. thousands of people will attend the events at the washington, d.c. convention center. >> thank you for stepping up. thank you for keeping us strong. thank you for always making us proud. fred is in for mark talking about the 49ers and the harbowl. >> orwe will be having two weeks of this. okay? everyone at jim harbaugh's press conference wanted him to talk about this sibling rivalry but he said the super bowl is about the players, like quarterback colin kaepernick. yesterday he through like a complete quarterback. he completed 16-21 passes, 233 yards. one touchdown. and the former nfl quarterback jim harbaugh loves colin kaepernick's throwing skills. again, word we used was piercing with his throws. you know, he is accurate and has the ability to drive the ball through the defense. >> just the way colin kaepernick runs, you know, the gracefulness of his stride, the ground that he covers, it
